88 Palms unveil video for "Bright Lights" + announce "Love Safari" EP

Don't we all need a dose of stylishness every now and then? This week we get our fix from this video by NYC synthpop duo 88 Palms for single "Bright Lights", which is counterintuitively set in the dark rooms of a downtown NYC venue. The band's seductive melodies and loungy arrangements immediately bring to mind a more electronic version of Sade, filtered through the glitter of glo-fi. Sensual and vaguely dreamy, the track sets the ideal atmosphere for mass flirting, which is reason good enough to look forward to a whole EP of this: titled 'Love Safari' it's scheduled for a May 25th release.

Brittany Campbell, Bianca Muñiz and Aberdeen play The Revolution #26 on 04.28

The Revolution, National Sawdust's monthly appointment with emerging NYC artists, returns on Saturday, April 28th with three artists perfectly complementing each other.

Talented soul pop and visual artist Brittany Campbell, who graced the cover of what will probably be remembered as the weirdest cover of our print magazine (back in 2016), will be the main attraction of the night, joined on stage by brass band Aberdeen's dynamic and cinematic instrumentals, and by Bianca Muñiz's delicate but somewhat troubled soul ballads.

Tickets and info can be found here, check out a YouTube compilation with two videos per artist, streaming below.

Slow Cooked Offers Alt-Soul At A Simmer

New Orleans is only about an 8 hour drive from Austin, but its cultural influence seems to wash up on our shores regularly. Slow Cooked is gets its name and derives its influence from the 'slow cooked' gumbo of Louisiana of which its methodology can also be applied to soul music.  Multiple ingredients and distinct soulful sounds swirl around band leader, Alex Hartley, who orchestrates the sextet with the patience and experience of a tenured soul man. Vocalist, Ida Khojandpour, brings Slow Cooked tracks to life through her versatile singing prowess.  Slow Cooked claims a variety of influences which evidences their trajectory towards alt-soul.  Listed influences include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Vulfpeck, Thelonious Monk, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Bruno Mars, Charles Mingus, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and Radiohead. Indulge your senses by catching the newly formed Slow Cooked, as they begin to raise the heat in Austin.

Sudan Archives releases darkly soulful new single, "Nont For Sale"

Brittney Denise Parks taught herself how to play the violin from an early age. The Ohio-via-L.A. transplant, who goes by Sudan Archives, studied Northeast and West African fiddlers and musicians like Asim Gorashi, Ali Farka Touré, and Judeh Camarah before she developed an interest in electronic music. Upon discovering a wider instrumental palette, Parks was determined to tastefully merge both as she sought for a new and unique sound. And Parks has done just that on her latest single, "Nont for Sale," a darkly-soulful meditation on a complicated friendship where she shares sneering expressions of contempt over plucked violin flickers and a jerky, finger-snapping beat.

"Nont for Sale" is the latest single off of Sudan Archives' sophomore EP, Sink, which is set for release on May 25 via Stones Throw. Juan Rodríguez

Rosehardt plays vulnerable alt R&B at Baby's All Right 04.06

New York's Rosehardt (real name Caleb Eberhardt) has a unique musical aesthetic that would be hard to categorize as any one genre. It's a little bit nu-soul, a little bit R&B, a little bit hip-hop, and a lot of heart. On his forthcoming LP, Songs in the Key of Solitude, dropping April 6th, Eberhardt throws caution to the wind and embraces myriad influences to the utmost effectiveness. Of the three tracks available for preview on his bandcamp - all varying wildly in style - "Fall Into You" is a stunning example of the end result of Eberhardt's stylistic melting pot yielding something greater than the sum of its parts. He sings, "I just wanna be used/I don't wanna be loved/I just want someone to take me for granted." It's compelling material and makes for a unique listen. Rosehardt is playing a record release show at Baby's All Right on April 6th, with support from Warren Wolfe and Synead. Listen to "Fall Into You" below! - Ethan Ames
